I have extensive dog training experience as I trained my german shepards on hand signals and voice signals on my own. We have a ferret who the kids are pretty good with, and a rabbit who is extremely gentle but they know not to try and pick him up as they could harm him. So, would either of these breeds be good for my family based on our experience w dogs and small animals?

I would never trust a dog trainer who claims to have “extensive” experience, but can’t spell German ShepHErd OR Papillon and doesn’t know that Spitz breeds are supposed to have prey drive or that small breed puppies + small children = nightmare.
No, neither breed, on paper, is right for your family. Most responsible breeders and rescues require their small dogs to go to homes with children over 6 or 10.
Hold off until your kids are older and until you can find breeds that either don’t have prey drive or wait until the small critters have died.

I don’t recommend either of these breeds!!! I have a rabbit and a cavalier king charles spaniel. So you should get one of these. Cavaliers are gorgeous and if you feed them the right amount of food then they are active and beautiful. I do think papillions are great dogs though and I personally would love to have one. Many breeds of dog have a strong prey drive but not cavaliers! Be careful that your rabbit doesn’t get to scared of the dog as my friends dog gave her rabbit a heart attack.

talk to breeders about requirements
talk to trainers, vets and groomers on care
dogs are hunters and ferrets/rabbits are prey
all up to dogs training and your ability to train and supervise
